Apostasy in the Church

Scripture warns that a falling away will come before the Lord returns. This page sets out what the Bible says, how to test what we hear, and documented developments in the wider church, measured against the Word of God.

Scripture foundation

Let no one deceive you in any way. For it will not be unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of destruction.

2 Thessalonians 2:3 (WEB)

For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts, and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn away to fables.

2 Timothy 4:3–4 (WEB)

Many false prophets will arise and will lead many astray.

Matthew 24:11 (WEB)

For false christs and false prophets will arise, and they will show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the chosen ones.

Matthew 24:24 (WEB)

Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

1 John 4:1 (WEB)

But false prophets also arose among the people, as false teachers will also be among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master who bought them, bringing on themselves swift destruction.

2 Peter 2:1 (WEB)

Beloved, while I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I was constrained to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For there are certain men who crept in secretly, even those who were long ago written about for this condemnation: ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into indecency, and denying our only Master, God, and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Jude 1:3–4 (WEB)

Things to be aware of

How to test a teaching

The believers in Berea are held up as an example because they checked even the apostle Paul's preaching against Scripture:

Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

Acts 17:11 (WEB)
  1. Open the Bible yourself. Read the verses in context, not just a clip or a quote.
  2. Ask what it says about Jesus. Does the teaching agree that Jesus is the Christ, come in the flesh, the only way to the Father? “By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God,” (1 John 4:2, WEB)
  3. Does it add to or take away from Scripture? “Don’t you add to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be found a liar.” (Proverbs 30:6, WEB)
  4. Look at the fruit over time. “By their fruits you will know them.” (Matthew 7:16, WEB)

Common warning signs

The prosperity gospel

Teaching that faith is a means to wealth, or that giving money guarantees a financial return, turns the Gospel into a transaction. Paul warns against those who suppose that godliness is a means of gain and calls contentment "great gain" (1 Timothy 6:5–10).

Denying the authority of Scripture

When parts of the Bible are treated as optional, error usually follows. “Every Scripture is God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16, WEB) (see 2 Timothy 3:16–17).

Failed prophecies and date-setting

Scripture gives a test for a word claimed to be from the Lord: if it does not come to pass, the LORD has not spoken it (Deuteronomy 18:21–22). Jesus said no one knows the day or the hour (Matthew 24:36).

Interfaith blending ("Chrislam")

Efforts to merge Christianity with other religions, or to say all faiths lead to God, set aside the exclusive claim of Christ. “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.” (John 14:6, WEB) See also Acts 4:12.

Replacement theology

The idea that the Church has permanently replaced Israel in God's purposes is answered by Paul: God has not rejected His people, and “the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable” (Romans 11:29, WEB) (Romans 11:1–2, 25–29).

A gospel without repentance

A message that offers comfort but never calls people to turn from sin is not the message Jesus preached (Mark 1:15; Luke 24:47).

These are teachings to test, not people to attack. We are called to be “speaking truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15, WEB).

United Church of Canada interim report calls Christian Zionism a 'primary theological problem'

· Americas

An interim 'post-Gaza theology' report prepared for the United Church of Canada's General Council proposes naming "Christian Zionism, not Judaism" as a primary theological problem, and supports continuing Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions. The church describes it as early-stage work rather than a final statement.

Measured against Scripture. Paul writes that God has not cast away His people Israel and that "the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable" (Romans 11:1–2, 29, WEB). Treating God's continuing purposes for Israel as the problem moves toward replacement theology.

Resurfaced sermon clip links Judgment Day accountability to voting

· Americas

IBTimes UK reports on a resurfaced clip from a November 2024 service at Eagle Mountain International Church. In it, Kenneth Copeland describes something he says he "saw in the spirit": people who did not "pray and vote" being held responsible at Judgment Day.

Measured against Scripture. believers are told to test every spirit (1 John 4:1) and not to add to God's word (Proverbs 30:6; Revelation 22:18). A claimed vision that adds new conditions to the judgment described in Scripture should be weighed carefully against what the Bible actually says.

Resurfaced podcast clip: Methodist pastor says it is 'OK' not to believe in the virgin birth

· Americas

The Christian Post reports on a December 2024 podcast clip in which United Methodist pastor Adam Hamilton said the virgin birth accounts are "less about biology and primarily about theology" and that it is "OK" not to believe them. His campaign says he personally believes in the virgin birth.

Measured against Scripture. the virgin birth is foretold in Isaiah 7:14 and recorded as fulfilled in Matthew 1:22–23 and Luke 1:34–35. Teaching that believers may set it aside contradicts the plain testimony of Scripture.

PC(USA) committee adds GE Aerospace and Palantir to its divestment list

· Americas

Presbyterian News Service reports that the denomination's investment committee approved its 2027 divestment list on 21 October, adding GE Aerospace and Palantir following a 2026 General Assembly vote. The engagement process began in 2024 over concerns relating to Israel and the Palestinian territories.

Measured against Scripture. Something to weigh: Scripture calls the Church to seek justice and mercy for all people, and also records God's covenant promises concerning Israel (Genesis 12:3; Romans 11:28–29). Denominational policy on Israel deserves to be tested against the whole counsel of Scripture.
